Updated September 28, 2026 by Chris Horton. Budget planning, not a quote. How we estimate costs
For homeowners with no quote yet. Pick the door and describe the job, and this returns the published national planning range for that work, the scope lines that move a door price most, and the questions worth settling before a contractor measures. It does not price your house, and it does not invent a total.
This is deliberately not a precise estimator. Door pricing turns on things no form can know: what is behind the trim, how square the opening is, and what labor costs where you live. What a planning range is good for is setting expectations before the first contractor visit and telling you which lines to insist on in writing.
Every dollar figure below is published on UpgradeWorth and sourced. Where we have no published figure for something, the tool flags the item and prices nothing.
Step 1 of 4 · The door
The door
Interior doors, storm doors and garage doors are out of scope for this tool.
Scope
These lines change what a contractor is pricing. Most of them we flag rather than price, because we have no published figure for them on their own.
Options we can price
For an entry door, UpgradeWorth publishes the installed range as a whole rather than as separately priced add-ons. This tool will show you that range and flag the scope lines instead of adding numbers we cannot source.

Where these numbers come from
Every figure this tool displays is published on UpgradeWorth with its source shown on the page it comes from.
- Entry doors — installed range and the Good/Better/Best tiers, plus the national steel door benchmark, from our front door replacement cost guide.
- Patio doors — the typical installed range, the national average, removal and disposal, a new opening in a solid wall, and the glass-unit-only path, from our patio door replacement cost guide.
- How we work — how we estimate home improvement costs.
What this tool will not do
- It will not price your house. National ranges are a planning aid, not a local estimate.
- It will not price a line we have no published figure for. Those are flagged instead, with nothing added.
- It will not label a contractor’s price fair, high or a bargain.
- It does not cover interior doors, storm doors or garage doors.
- It cannot see what is behind the trim. Rot and out-of-square openings are found after the old door comes out, which is why an agreed written repair rate matters more than a tighter estimate.
