What moves your number
Replacement type is usually the biggest swing. An insert keeps the existing frame; a full-frame replacement removes everything down to the rough opening and adds labor, trim and finishing work. It costs more, but it is the right call when frames are damaged. Frame material comes next: fiberglass and wood start where vinyl tops out. Style matters less, and triple-pane glass adds a premium that published sources disagree on, which is why the range widens when you select it.

Some consumer guides describe triple-pane windows as costing nearly twice as much as double-pane. Those figures compare average project prices rather than the same window with a different glass package, so we do not use them for the premium.
How the ranges are calculated
- Low uses the lowest published price for your material, then applies the smallest published premiums for your options.
- High uses the highest published price and the largest premiums.
- Typical is the middle half of that span (from 25% to 75% of the way between low and high), with premiums set to the middle half of their published ranges.
- Totals are the per-window figures multiplied by your window count and rounded to the nearest $100. We do not apply volume discounts, because published claims about them are not consistent.
What the calculator does not price
We found no consistent, well-sourced figures for several common cost drivers, so the calculator flags them instead of inventing a number: oversized or custom windows, upper-story access, brick or stucco openings, lead-safe work in pre-1978 homes, frame and sill repair, permits and your local labor market. It also does not split the estimate into materials and labor, because published splits vary too widely to be useful.
