Windows & Doors Quote Checklist

Updated October 1, 2026 by UpgradeWorth Editorial. Tick only what is written on the quote. Planning aid — not a contractor rating. How we
estimate costs

Use this sheet with a written window or exterior-door quote in front of you. Each unticked line is a question to ask before you sign. Some gaps also mean two totals are not comparable until both papers answer them.

How to use (5 minutes)

  1. Print this page (or save as PDF from your browser).
  2. Tick a box only when the line appears in writing on the quote — not what the salesperson said.
  3. Copy every unticked line into an email back to the contractor.
  4. When the revised quote returns, run it through the Quote Analyzer before you compare prices.

A. Product identity

  • Manufacturer and exact series / product line named (brand alone is not enough)
  • Frame material (windows) or slab / skin material (doors) stated
  • Glass package: panes, Low-E, gas fill — or “no glass” / sidelite-transom glass called out
  • NFRC U-factor and SHGC in writing (windows; glazed doors)
  • Every opening / unit listed with style, size or rough opening, and location
  • Finish, color, and door hardware / lockset included or priced on their own lines

B. Installation method

  • Windows: insert vs full-frame stated (split if the job is mixed)
  • Doors: slab vs prehung vs full-frame / remodel stated
  • Multi-story access or scaffolding noted if upper openings are included
  • Exterior wall type (siding, stucco, brick/stone) acknowledged where it changes finishing

C. Scope inclusions

  • Removal and disposal of the old units
  • Interior trim / stops / finishing — who does it
  • Exterior trim, capping, or brickmold — who does it
  • Flashing / sill pan / weathersealing method in writing
  • Doors: threshold, sill, sweeps, and weatherstrip scope stated
  • Permit: who pulls and who pays
  • Ag
reed rate for rot or structural repair found after removal
  • If home built before 1978: lead-safe work rules acknowledged

D. Warranty and commercial terms

  • Product warranty length, and any registration or certified-installer conditions
  • Labor / workmanship warranty length (separate from product)
  • Transferability if you sell the home
  • Price validity window stated
  • Payment schedule and change-order rule in writing
  • Explicit exclusions list

Not comparable until

If any of these are blank on one or both quotes, do not treat the totals as the same job. Get the lines filled in first.

  • Installation method unknown or mixed without split pricing
  • Exact product series unnamed
  • NFRC ratings missing (prices without product identity)
  • Removal and disposal silent on one paper only
  • Flashing / sealing method silent
  • No rot-repair rate agreed
  • Labor warranty silent on one paper only
