Milgard Window Warranty Explained: Full Lifetime Upgrade, Standard Coverage & Transfers

Short answer. Milgard sells three windows under three different warranties, and which one covers your home depends on how your windows were bought and when. The core terms were updated effective November 1, 2026, so an order placed around that date can carry very different coverage from one placed a few months earlier. New in the 2026 documents: an optional Full Lifetime Warranty Upgrade that has to be bought with the windows and lapses when you sell, a standard Replacement Product warranty with a split lifetime / 10-year structure, and a New Construction warranty that is lifetime for the first owner and 10 years for everyone after. Nothing is lifetime for everyone, nothing covers accidental broken glass unless you paid for the upgrade, and labor and shipping only apply inside Milgard’s Service Territory.

This guide works through the 2026 terms line by line, straight from Milgard’s own warranty documents effective November 1, 2026, and shows how to tell which one is on your order.

Which Milgard warranty applies to your windows?

Milgard groups its 2026 coverage into three documents. Only one applies to any given window, and the sales channel decides which:

  • Optional Full Lifetime Warranty Upgrade (effective 11/1/2026). An upgrade that must be purchased at the time of the original product sale and reflected in Milgard’s order documents. If it is not on the order, it does not apply. Milgard’s warranty page lists it as available on V400 Tuscany, V300 Trinsic and C700 series within Milgard’s Service Territory. It covers the original consumer owner for as long as they own and reside in the home.
  • Replacement Product Limited Warranty (effective 11/1/2026). The default for windows, doors and moving glass wall systems sold for installation into an existing structure after November 1, 2026, when no upgrade was bought. Lifetime for the first residential homeowner, 10 years for everyone else.
  • New Construction Limited Warranty (effective 11/1/2026). The default for products sold for installation in new construction after November 1, 2026. Lifetime for the first homeowner, 10 years for subsequent owners.

Older orders — anything sold or manufactured before November 1, 2026 — are not covered by these three documents. You read those under the certificate that was in force on your purchase date. Milgard keeps the archive at its Find Your Warranty page by year and location.

2026 Milgard coverage, side by side

The table below pulls each coverage line directly from the three 2026 warranty documents. Durations run from the product manufacture date on the two standard warranties, and from original purchase (natural lifetime of the owner-occupant) on the upgrade.

How to read the table. Lifetime on the standard warranties is tied to owning and occupying the home, not to the window. The moment you move out or rent the home, you drop to the “All Other Owners” column, and so does whoever buys from you. Only the upgrade promises lifetime glass breakage, and only while the original buyer still lives there — if you sell, that benefit does not travel with the house.

Does your Milgard order include the Full Lifetime Upgrade?

The upgrade is not automatic. Milgard spells this out: it must be purchased at the time of the original product sale and reflected in Milgard’s order documents, and where it is unavailable or was not selected, the standard warranty applies instead. In practical terms, that means three things to check before the sale closes:

  1. Series. Milgard’s warranty page lists the upgrade as available on V400 Tuscany, V300 Trinsic and C700. If your quote names a different series, the upgrade is not an option for your order — the standard replacement or new construction warranty will apply. Our C700 Quote Decoder and Tuscany Quote Decoder walk through how series names show up on real quotes.
  2. Service Territory. The upgrade is only sold within Milgard’s Service Territory (milgard.com/serviceterritory). Outside that footprint, the upgrade cannot apply and labor/shipping rules under the standard warranty tighten.
  3. The paper trail. Ask the dealer to show the upgrade as a line on your Milgard sales order — not just a verbal assurance or a bullet in a brochure. Milgard explicitly says it has to be “reflected in Milgard’s order documents” for the Full Lifetime terms to govern.

If any of those three is missing, assume the standard Replacement Product warranty is what you have.

What happens to the warranty when you sell your home?

The two sides of this question sit at opposite ends of the 2026 documents, so it is easy to confuse them:

  • If you had the Full Lifetime Upgrade. It ends at closing. Milgard writes that if the original consumer sells the dwelling, uses it as a rental or for commercial purposes, or stops living there, the upgrade’s lifetime coverage shall lapse, and the next owner gets the “All Other Owners” terms of the standard warranty instead — so for an existing-home sale, that is 10 years from manufacture.
  • If you had the standard Replacement Product warranty. It transfers, but the lifetime piece does not travel with it. You, the original residential owner, held the lifetime version while you owned and occupied the home. The next owner steps into the All Other Owners column: a 10-year clock from the window’s manufacture date for frames, IGU seal, finishes and hardware, with the same 30-day claim notice and the same Service Territory rules. Milgard also puts the handoff on the seller: each owner is “responsible for passing this Warranty to the next Owner before or at the time of sale.”
  • If the home was new construction. Same logic — lifetime for the first buyer only, 10 years for every subsequent buyer, transferable.

Two practical takeaways. If you are buying a resale and the seller tells you the Milgard windows have a “lifetime warranty,” what you actually inherit is the 10-year All Other Owners term, measured from manufacture — not from your closing. And if you plan to turn the home into a rental, the Full Lifetime Upgrade stops at the moment you move out, even if nothing else changes.

What if my windows were bought before November 1, 2026?

The three documents above only govern products sold or manufactured after November 1, 2026. Older windows carry whatever certificate was in force on their purchase date, and those terms were different in prior years. Do not use the 2026 PDF as evidence of coverage for a 2018 or 2022 Milgard order.

There is one wording nuance worth flagging. The upgrade PDF ties its scope to windows and doors “manufactured by Milgard after November 1, 2026,” while the two standard warranties attach to products “sold by Milgard Manufacturing LLC after November 1, 2026.” For an order written in late October 2026 that ships in December, which document governs is not obvious from the warranty page alone. If your purchase sits close to that date, do not guess — pull your actual certificate from Milgard’s Find Your Warranty tool or ask your dealer to confirm in writing which 2026 document is on your order.

How to file a Milgard warranty claim

Milgard’s claim process is the same across the three 2026 warranties:

  1. Notify Milgard within 30 days. All three documents require claims to be submitted within 30 days of discovering the condition. Later notice can be grounds for denial.
  2. Use one of the two official channels. Submit at milgard.com/service-request or call 1-800-MILGARD (1-800-645-4273). Email, dealer forms and third-party sites are not the authorized route and may not start the clock.
  3. Have the paperwork ready. Milgard asks for contact information, the address of the home, the order number, a description of each product and the condition, and photographs. The order number is how Milgard confirms whether your purchase carries the upgrade or a standard warranty.
  4. Give reasonable access. You are responsible, at your own expense, for moving window décor and furniture, dealing with security alarms, and providing scaffolding or lift equipment for windows a 15-foot extension ladder cannot reach. If Milgard cannot safely access the window, it will supply the parts only and no labor.
  5. Expect parts, repair, or — if neither is practicable — a refund. Milgard chooses the remedy. Replacement parts may not aesthetically match the original, and if a line has been discontinued Milgard will substitute what it considers equal in value or quality. If repair is not practicable and a replacement product cannot be provided, Milgard may refund the purchase price of the affected product.

Response times are not published in the warranty, so we are not going to put a number on them here. Milgard simply commits to review and respond “in a timely manner.”

What Milgard’s 2026 warranties do not cover

The exclusions section is similar across the three documents and worth reading in full before you file. In summary, Milgard will not provide a remedy for conditions caused in whole or part by:

  • Installation. Any installation issue, failure to follow Milgard’s published installation recommendations, applications or configurations that exceed the product’s design capacity or violate codes/plans/specifications, jobsite or trades damage, mishandling or storage, failure to properly incorporate the window into the building envelope, building settlement, or off-site construction, lifting or transportation of preassembled wall sections.
  • Normal wear, aging and weathering. Gradual fading, chalking or darkening of colored surfaces, and tarnish, corrosion, oxidization or discoloration of hardware finishes other than stainless steel.
  • Lack of maintenance or lack of use. Operable windows should be opened and closed monthly. Interior moisture or condensation, and insect intrusion around or through the window, are not covered either.
  • Alterations and add-ons. Reinstallation, applied tints, films, sealants, caulk or paint, field assembly or fabrication, security systems and window coverings. In practice, applying a sun-control film to a Milgard window can void coverage on that glass.
  • Wind-driven rain and extreme conditions. Water intrusion from wind-driven rain in high-wind events, environmental elements that exceed the product’s performance ratings, and — on moving glass walls and doors — intrusion beneath or through flat or low-profile sills caused by inadequate building protections.
  • Force and chemicals. Power washing, harsh chemicals such as brick wash, acids, salts, abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Acts of nature and third-party events. Fire, earthquake, vandalism, riot or civil disorder.
  • Glass blemishes within accepted standards. Minor imperfections allowable under ASTM C 1036 (Quality 3 flat glass), ASTM C 1048 (heat-treated flat glass) and ASTM C 1172 (laminated architectural flat glass), heat reflection off the product, and minor curvature of a glass panel or IGU.
  • Glass breakage on standard warranties. The replacement and new-construction documents only cover stress cracks within the first year — accidental broken or cracked glass is not a warranty claim unless you paid for the Full Lifetime Upgrade (and even then, specialty glass such as V-groove, laminated, and blinds-in-glass is excluded, as is any glass in a garden window).
  • Caulking and sealants. Caulking between the window and exterior cladding or trim is not part of the product and is a homeowner maintenance item.
  • Field-test results and gas fill. Milgard does not warrant NAFS/NFRC test numbers once a window is installed in a real wall, and it does not warrant specific gas retention or fill levels in insulated glass.

Milgard also disclaims consequential, incidental, indirect and special damages, caps liability at the price of the affected product, and requires any legal action under the warranty to be brought by the current owner on an individual basis — not a class action. Some of those limits may not apply in your state.

Dealer checklist: before you sign a Milgard quote

Most warranty surprises happen at the sales table, not at the claim desk. Before you sign:

  1. Which series is on the quote? Fiberglass C700, vinyl V400 Tuscany, vinyl V300 Trinsic, or something else. Only the first three are listed as eligible for the Full Lifetime Upgrade.
  2. Is the Full Lifetime Upgrade a line on the Milgard order document? Not a brochure, not a verbal “it comes with lifetime.” A line.
  3. Is the installation address inside Milgard’s Service Territory? Confirm against the territory map. Outside that footprint, you pay inspection, labor, disposal and shipping for every claim, forever.
  4. Who handles a warranty service call? Milgard provides parts and, within the covered window and Service Territory, Skilled Labor for the window itself. Your dealer handles installation-related issues, not Milgard. Ask the dealer in writing how they handle a service callback and whether they charge a trip fee.
  5. Where does the paper trail live? Save your Milgard order number, the dealer invoice and the shipping/manufacture date. All three are what you will need to file a claim later, and the manufacture date is what starts the 10-year clock on finishes, hardware and (where applicable) the IGU seal.
  6. Did your installer register the warranty? Milgard says registering simplifies the service experience. You can register at milgard.com/warranty/register-your-warranty.

If your quote is already in hand, the Window Quote Analyzer walks through the per-opening and per-brand pieces of the proposal before you commit. For the full line-item list a Milgard proposal should name — series, glass, installation method, trim, flashing, permits, disposal and your cancellation right — see the window replacement quote checklist.

Milgard warranty FAQ

Is every Milgard window “lifetime”?

No. Lifetime terms only apply to the original residential homeowner who still owns and occupies the home, and even then only for specific coverage items (frame, IGU seal under the upgrade, hardware under the upgrade). Subsequent owners, rentals and commercial properties fall to 10 years from manufacture. Finishes, electronic hardware, weatherstripping and screens are shorter still.

Does the Milgard warranty transfer when I sell my house?

The standard Replacement Product and New Construction warranties are transferable, but only at the “All Other Owners” terms — 10 years from the manufacture date for the major coverage items. The Full Lifetime Upgrade does not transfer; it lapses when the original owner sells, moves out, or rents the home, and the buyer steps into the same 10-year All Other Owners column.

Does Milgard cover broken glass?

Only if you bought the Full Lifetime Upgrade. The upgrade covers accidental, non-specialty broken or cracked glass for as long as the original owner lives in the home, provided the breakage did not come from unreasonable use. Specialty glass (laminated, V-groove, blinds-in-glass) and glass in garden windows are excluded even under the upgrade. The two standard warranties only cover a stress crack within the first year.

What is Milgard’s Service Territory and why does it matter?

Milgard will only provide Skilled Labor and pay shipping on claims if the home is inside Milgard’s Service Territory at the time the product was purchased. Outside that territory, Milgard provides parts and the homeowner pays for inspection, labor, disposal/recycling and shipping. The map is at milgard.com/serviceterritory.

How long do I have to file a Milgard warranty claim?

Thirty days from the day you discover the condition. All three 2026 warranties say the same. Filing much later than that can be grounds for denial.

My windows were installed in 2019. Which warranty applies?

Not these three. The 2026 documents only govern products sold or manufactured after November 1, 2026. For an older install, pull the warranty certificate that was in force on your purchase date through Milgard’s Find Your Warranty tool.

Other brands’ warranties
